The chiller can reach into the low 40F’s, even down into high 30F’s with the right conditions. Ambient temps and sun exposure account for the majority of the heat load on a cold therapy tub (your body heat is insignificant compared to the sun). Reducing the external heat load will improve chiller performance. Low to mid 40F’s should be possible on a most +/-100 gallons setup even in full sun / less than ideal conditions. Our cold therapy chillers can be used indoors and outdoors, except in freezing conditions
Cost to Run (lower than most expect):
At $0.12/KWh the monthly cost of operation should be around $18-$28/month. The compressor and fan only turn on when cooling is needed, once the water reaches your set point they turn off and only the low wattage pump continues to run.
A common question we get revolves around setting the chiller up on a timer. Ideally you’ll want to keep the water cold at all times. There’s a few reasons for this –
Cold water keeps bacteria (slimy walls) largely under control by slowing or stopping their growth. This significantly reduces the amount of maintenance needed to keep your water clean for longer periods of time. This means less frequent water changes and that much lower levels of sanitizer being an effective doses (chlorine/hydrogen peroxide/etc).
If you are using it on a regular basis the amount of potential power savings will be fairly insignificant, the heat it would gain in the “off” period still needs to be removed when you turn it back on. So if running is normally cost $18-$28/month you might be able to save $3-$5/month. However have to change water and the filter more often so it is unlikely to be a net cost savings.
When you cut power to the chiller you also cut power to the pump. Pumps get the most wear and tear during startup, that’s when a pump is most likely to fail as well. Cycling the power to the chiller is just adding unnecessary wear and tear to the pump.
*Please note your setup needs to gravity prime to the pump, the pump is not capable of self priming/suction. Place the chiller within 3' of the drain of your tub, the bottom of the chiller should be at the same or lower height compared to the bottom of your tub – do not elevate the chiller above the tub. An overly long tubing run from the tub drain to the chiller inlet may cause the pump to fail to move enough water.

Care & Maintenance
Leisurecraft wood-fired hot tubs are designed for outdoor use and require relatively simple care. Regular water changes, keeping the tub clean and protecting the wood will help maintain its appearance and performance for years.
Before Each Use
Check that the water is clean and clear before entering.
Remove leaves, insects or other debris from the water.
Confirm the water level is sufficient before lighting the wood-burning heater.
Never operate the heater without the proper amount of water in the tub.
Check the heater, chimney and heat shield for visible damage or obstructions.
Use only clean, dry firewood in the wood-burning heater.
Check the water temperature before entering and mix the water as necessary to ensure an even temperature.
After Each Use / Day-to-Day Care
Replace the cover after the water has cooled sufficiently to help keep leaves and debris out.
Remove any floating debris.
Keep the area around the heater and chimney clear.
Periodically wipe the inside of lined tubs with a soft cloth.
For traditional cedar tubs, normal cedar tannins may slightly colour the water, particularly when the tub is new. This is normal.
Change the water regularly based on frequency of use and water condition. Leisurecraft notes that many owners use their wood-fired tub several times and then drain and refill it rather than maintaining the water indefinitely.
Regular / Seasonal Care
Drain and thoroughly rinse the tub when the water becomes cloudy, develops an odour or has been sitting unused.
Clean lined interiors with warm water, mild soap and a soft cloth or sponge.
Avoid abrasive pads, bleach and harsh chemical cleaners.
Inspect the drain and fittings for leaks or damage.
Inspect the chimney and heater regularly for soot or buildup.
Remove ashes from the heater as required once completely cool.
Check all fasteners, bands and hardware and tighten if required.
Clean the exterior cedar with mild soap and water as needed.
Wood Care
Leisurecraft cedar can be left unfinished and will naturally weather to a silver-grey colour. This does not reduce the natural durability of the cedar.
If you prefer to maintain the original cedar colour:
Apply a high-quality penetrating exterior wood finish suitable for cedar.
Leisurecraft recommends Livos exterior wood finishes.
Reapply when the finish begins to fade rather than waiting for the wood to become heavily weathered.
Do not apply film-forming paint or finishes unless specifically suitable for the application.
Winter Care
If the hot tub will not be used during freezing temperatures:
Completely drain the tub, drain assembly and any water-containing components.
Do not allow standing water to freeze inside plumbing, fittings or equipment.
Keep snow and ice from accumulating excessively on the cover.
Store removable accessories in a dry location when possible.
Once a Year
Completely drain and deep-clean the tub.
Inspect the heater, chimney, heat shield and hardware.
Check all plumbing and drain connections.
Inspect cedar for rough areas, damage or excessive weathering.
Lightly sand rough cedar where required.
Reapply exterior wood protection if desired.
Replace damaged or heavily worn components before continued use.
Avoid
Operating the heater without adequate water.
Harsh cleaners or bleach on cedar.
Pressure washing cedar at high pressure.
Allowing water to freeze inside the tub or fittings.
Leaving leaves or organic debris trapped under the cover for extended periods.
